Wieferich Adds Second Event to National Resume
College of Wooster junior Katie Wieferich closed the track and field regular season in record-breaking fashion at the Baldwin-Wallace Twilight Invitational on Friday night (May 19), posting the eighth-fastest time in the nation in the 5,000 meters en route to qualifying in a second event for the NCAA Div. III Track and Field Championships hosted by Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill., on May 25-27. Not only did the Fighting Scot junior post a provisional qualifying time in the 5,000, but she also shattered the previous school record by over one minute. Wieferich’s time of 17:07.67 was 22 seconds faster than her nearest competitor and 1:10.37 better than the previous Wooster mark achieved by Beth Huffman in 1999. Wieferich will be competing in two events at the upcoming national meet as she has already qualified in the 10,000 meters and currently owns the seventh-best mark in that event at 36:19.58. Joining her next week in Illinois will be senior pole vaulter Jill Berner, who cleared 11 feet, 9 inches at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, currently tied for the 14th-best mark in the nation. She also competed at the Baldwin-Wallace meet on Friday night, finishing second with a leap of 11 feet, 6 inches. |
