A handful of student-athletes got the 2004 track and field season underway for The College of Wooster during a Friday night quadrangular at Oberlin College, with individuals from Hiram College and Notre Dame (Ohio) College also competing at the non-scoring meet.

Wooster's men's squad proved dominant in the field events, winning three, and also turned in four top-five finishes on the track. James Williams and Nii Djan Tackie swept the jumping events, with Williams placing first in the long jump (21 feet, 1.5 inches) and Tackie in the triple jump (41 feet, five inches). Tackie had three top-five efforts by himself, also finishing third in the 200 meters (24.97) and fifth in the long jump (17 feet, 10 inches).

The Scots' other winner was shot putter Keith Vance, who debuted with a throw of 48 feet, 8.25 inches, while teammates Dan Groth and Marco Garcia came in fourth (36 feet, 2.75 inches) and fifth (35 feet, four inches), respectively.

Chris Taft turned in another Wooster victory in the 1000-meter run (2:40.53), while additional notables included James Ellinger and Patrick Wynne earning fourth-place in the 600 meters (1:36.45) and 1000 meters (2:52.44), respectively.

On the women's side, the Scots were paced by a win in the pole vault courtesy of Katherine Legg, as she cleared eight feet. Recording a runner-up showing in her collegiate debut was high jumper Dana Doran-Myers, who bowed out after jumping four feet, 10 inches. Also, Juliann Draper registered fourth-place and fifth-place marks in the triple jump (27 feet, 8.75 inches) and long jump (14 feet), respectively.

Wooster's indoor season begins in earnest this week, as the teams will travel to Wabash College for the North Coast Athletic Conference Relays on Saturday (Jan. 31).
