| In a final tune-up before the indoor conference
meet, The College of Wooster track and field teams earned third-
(men) and fourth-place (women) finishes, at the six-team Greater
Cleveland Championships on Friday (Feb. 20).
Host Baldwin-Wallace College won both the mens and womens
competitions. On the womens side, Baldwin-Wallace finished
with 170 points and Woosters squad totaled 71, while in mens
action, the Yellow Jackets tallied 152 points and the Scots werent
too far behind with 90.
Highlighting the individual results for Wooster were pole
vaulter Jill Berner and shot putter Keith Vance,
who both recorded NCAA Div. III Championships-qualifying marks
and bettered previous school records in their respective events.
Berners mark of 10 feet, 6.75 inches was tops at the Greater
Cleveland Championships and 2.75 inches more than the school record
she set last week, while Vances throw of 51 feet, 0.75 inches
was nearly a foot better than his previous best mark indoors (50
feet, 2.25 inches).
Freshman Dana Doran-Myers also scored significant points
in the womens field events, taking third in the high jump,
clearing five feet, while senior Karina Colbenson and freshman Katie
Wieferich paced the Scots on the track. Colbenson was runner-up
in the 500-meter run (1:29.44) and Wieferich crossed the finish
line third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:31.36. Also noteworthy,
teammates Laura Barnhart, a sophomore, and Jessica Love,
a senior, tied for second-place in the 400 meters.
The Wooster men had a variety of contributors across the board.
Complementing Vances second-place in the shot put was another
victory via junior Nii Djan Tackie in the triple jump (44
feet, one inch), marking his third win of the season in that event.
Fellow jumper, James Williams, a senior, added a runner-up
showing in the long jump (20 feet, five inches).
On the track, sophomore Chris Taft had a pair of top-three
performances, running second in the 500 meters (1:09.24) and third
in the 1000 meters (2:40.84). Also contributing second-place finishes
were Rob Kelm, a first-year, in the 55-meter hurdles (8.29)
and junior Matt Linman in the 5000 meters (16:03.36). Freshman Tim
Presto was third overall in the 800 meters (1:59.82).
Wooster has the following weekend off from competition, but
can be seen the following weekend at the North Coast Athletic Conference
