Scots Hit Busy Stretch With Three Matches Over Six-Day Stretch
With the season quickly winding down, The College of Wooster has three matches scheduled this week, all of the North Coast Athletic Conference variety. On Monday, April 14, the Fighting Scots will have their work cut out when they travel to No. 21 ranked Kenyon College (10-4, 2-1 NCAC) for a 4:30 p.m. match-up. Then, they’ll close the regular season with three home matches, the first two coming against Ohio Wesleyan University (4-9, 1-5 NCAC) Thursday, April 17, at 4 p.m., and against Wittenberg University (6-5, 1-4 NCAC) Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. Last year, Wooster lost 9-0 to Kenyon, 8-1 to Ohio Wesleyan, and 6-2 to Wittenberg during the regular season. On April 7, Case Western Reserve University and Wooster were evenly matched throughout their non-conference affair, but the visiting Spartans did just enough to get past the Scots by a final score of 6-3 at the D.J. Hard Memorial Courts. All three doubles matches went down to the wire. Case prevailed 9-8 at No. 1, needing a 7-3 tiebreaker to decide the team point. Second and third doubles were both played to 8-6 decisions, with Erin Bauer (Delaware, Ohio / Rutherford B. Hayes) and Eden Kovacik (North Olmsted, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) picking up the first point for Wooster at No. 2. Bauer was a double winner. She split the first two sets 1-6 and 6-3 with her opponent at third singles, and then with the match already decided, they played a super tiebreaker in place of the third set, with Bauer easily prevailing 10-2. Also for the Scots, freshman Suzanne Hamby (Elmhurst, Ill. / York Community) picked up her first collegiate victory in convincing fashion, as she did not give up a game at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0). On April 9, Allegheny College cruised past visiting Wooster 9-0. Hamby nearly gave the Scots a point, suffering a tough 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 setback at the fourth singles position. Also playing well, sophomore Elissa Lauber (Dover, Ohio / Dover) almost won the second set at No. 1 singles before falling 6-1, 6-4. |
