The College of Wooster women's soccer team spent its weekend in Gambier, Ohio, splitting a pair of non-conference games. Friday afternoon, the Scots edged Hope College 2-1 and Saturday afternoon the Scots dropped a heartbreaker to regional foe Otterbein College 1-0.
The match with Hope (1-3-1) saw freshman phenom Winnie Adrien boot
both of Wooster's goals, vaulting the Scots to their fifth win in six outings.
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie through halftime, until Hope knocked
in the game's first goal 51:08 into the contest. Adrien responded, however,
scoring her first goal off of a Kelly Goss assist with 10 minutes
left in regulation. Less than three minutes later, Adrien converted an Erin
Lustic pass into a score, giving the Scots a 2-1 lead, and more importantly
the victory.
Wooster dominated the contest, out-shooting Hope by a 22-6 margin and holding a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Scots didn't fare as well on Saturday, as Otterbein (4-1-1) barely snuck by with a heartbreaking 1-0 win, finding the back of the Scots' net with only 16 seconds left in regulation. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Scots and dropped them to 5-2 overall on the season.
The Cardinals controlled most of the game, holding the Wooster to only give total shots, while firing 22 of their own. Otterbein also held the edge in corners by a 6-3 margin.
Defensively on the weekend, the Scots' goalkeeper Staci Alario recorded
nine saves, with seven of those coming against Otterbein.
Noteworthy, Adrien now has 19 points (8 goals, 3 assists) through seven games so far this season.
In its next action, Wooster will take road against John Carroll Tuesday, September 19 for a 7 p.m. start, followed by a home match-up against Heidelberg Wednesday, September 20 at 5 p.m. in its final tune-ups before opening North Coast Athletic Conference play.
