The College of Wooster women's soccer team kept its perfect record
in 2003 intact on Wednesday (Sept. 10), thanks to another impressive
showing from its offense, which saw the Scots fire seven balls past
the Muskingum College goalkeeper en route to a 7-2 non-conference
win at home.
Overall, Wooster (5-0) has scored 23 goals this season, just 14
away from its total from all of last year.
Muskingum (0-4) actually held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but it didn't
take long for Wooster to even things each time. After a Muskie breakaway
goal in the 12th minute, Amanda Coppes fed Brianna Lux a cross that
she headed into the bottom left corner, tying the match at one less
than three minutes later.
Following another Muskingum goal in the 22nd minute, Lux struck
again, this time unassisted during the 26th minute of action, and
the game stayed tied 2-2 at the half.
Just as they did in their most recent match against Anderson University,
the Scots went on to rout their opponent with five goals in the
second half. In fact, Coppes scored twice within the first 15:07
of the stanza, sandwiched by a tally off the foot of Anna Marin
Russell, to take a commanding lead (5-2).
Later, knocking in their third and fourth goals of the season, respectively,
were Alexa McCarthy and Danielle Witchey, with Christine Vanderwyden
earning an assist on McCarthy's.
Despite falling behind twice, Wooster controlled most of the action,
outshooting its visitors 24-2 and owning a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Scots will take their unblemished record to Canton on Saturday
(Sept. 13), when they will square off against NAIA opponent Walsh
University (2-2) at 1 p.m.
