The College of Wooster shut down Heidelberg College 4-0 Saturday afternoon (Aug. 31) and tied Mt. Union College 0-0 (Sept. 1) in women's soccer action at the Oberlin Classic to open 2002 1-0-1.

Wooster dominated Heidelberg from start to finish, scoring two goals in each half and outshooting the 'Berg 34-1. Beth Hemminger began her senior campaign with the team's first goal 17:34 into the contest off a pass from classmate Nicole DeSantis. Sophomore Sarah BonDurant followed up with her first collegiate goal six minutes before halftime, thanks to a feed from classmate Lauren Sherry.

Midway through the second stanza, the Scots found the back of the net on blasts from Christine VanderWyden, another sophomore, and first-year Susan McDowell 10 minutes apart. Senior Jessica Bacon and freshman Allison Hankus posted assists on those scores, respectively.

Wooster senior goalie Nicole Roman made a save on the only shot Heidelberg got off, while the 'Berg's Julia Rose scrambled to produce 20 saves.

The Scots controlled play during Sunday's match as well, but could not come up with the decisive score. Wooster outshot Mt. Union 31-13 and had 12 corner kicks to the Purple Raiders' two.

Senior Megan Klene and Hemminger had the most chances to score, firing six and four shots, respectively, while Roman upped her shutout streak to 185 minutes with 12 saves. Mt. Union's Amie Hardman came up with 20 saves of her own.

Wooster will attempt to come up with victory No. 2 on Wednesday (Sept. 4), when it travels to Westminster (Pa.) College for a non-league tilt, starting at 5:30 p.m.
