The College of Wooster women’s soccer team continues its busy early-season stretch this week with three non-conference matches scheduled. First, on Tuesday, Sept. 4, the Fighting Scots travel to Marietta College (1-1) for a 5 p.m. match-up. This weekend, Wooster will make its 2007 home debut, hosting Buffalo State College (1-1) Saturday, Sept. 8, and Alma College (1-0-1) Sunday, Sept. 9. Both starting times are slated for 1 p.m. The Scots have never lost before to any of this week’s opponents, as they’re 4-0 against Marietta, including a 3-0 shutout last year, and 2-0 versus Alma. Buffalo State and Wooster have never met on the pitch before.
Last Week: The Scots got their season off to a successful start, winning a pair of matches.
On Sept. 1, Wooster easily dispatched Ursuline College 3-0 in a contest played on the campus of Hiram College. The Scots outshot Ursuline 26-1 for the game, with goals coming from senior Laura Ayer (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) and freshman Liz Mott (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / The Masters School). Ayer, who has moved to the forward line after three seasons as a defender, scored twice, while Mott accounted for the other goal and assisted on both of Ayer’s. Nora Simon (Lexington, Ky. / Henry Clay) provided the helper on Mott’s goal, which gave Wooster a 2-0 lead right before halftime.
On Sept. 2, the Scots handed host Mt. Union College a 2-1 setback, behind the play of Mott. She had the game’s initial goal during the fifth minute, assisted by junior Taryn Higgins (Marblehead, Mass. / Marblehead). It remained 1-0 until midway through the second half when Mott would contribute an assist on what turned out to be the decisive score, as Ayer booted in her third goal of the young season. Defensively, senior Abby Brown (Copper Canyon, Texas / Marcus) worked all 90 minutes in goal, producing three saves during the win. |
