Following an 8-match, 16-day stretch to open the 2007 season, The College of Wooster has a light week ahead of it with just one contest scheduled. On Saturday, Sept. 22, the Fighting Scots will be at fellow northeast Ohio institution Case Western Reserve University (4-2) for a 1 p.m. match with the Spartans. This will mark the 24th Case-Wooster meeting on the women’s soccer pitch, with the Scots owning a 14-5-4 advantage in the series, including four-straight victories. Last fall, Wooster cruised to a decisive 5-1 win, thanks to a 3-goal, 1-assist effort from one of its players.
Last Week: The Scots suffered their first losses of the season, going 1-2 in three matches and sliding to 6-2 overall.
On Sept. 12, Chantal Koechli (Greer, S.C. / Brighton – Mich.) scored her first goal of the year late in regulation, but Wooster could not come up with the equalizer, as visiting Otterbein College walked away from Carl Dale Memorial Field with a 2-1 triumph in non-conference action. The Scots were attempting to get off to their first 6-0 start in team history, however, Otterbein had other ideas, scoring just 90 seconds in and once more about 10 minutes later. Koechli’s goal, the second of the sophomore midfielder’s career, came with just 5:50 remaining and it was assisted by freshman Liz Mott (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / The Masters School). Defensively, Wooster used two ‘keepers. During the first half, junior Staci Alario (Sparta, N.J. / Blair Academy) had five saves, while Abby Brown (Copper Canyon, Texas / Marcus) made four stops during the second, highlighted by one on a breakaway with about 30 seconds left.
On Sept. 14, Kate Kiley (Dedham, Mass. / Noble and Greenough School) scored a goal 3:55 into overtime, giving the Scots a thrilling 2-1 win at Carnegie Mellon University. Kiley’s game-winner came from long range, as she chipped it over the Carnegie Mellon goalie from approximately 30 yards out on Wooster’s second shot of the extra session. The Scots had taken a 1-0 lead very early on when Angela Evans (Worthington, Ohio / Thomas Worthington) scored on a free kick during the fourth minute. It marked the second career goal for the senior defender. Brown was the winning net-minder, although she did not have to record a save.
On Sept. 16, Wooster was back in western Pennsylvania where it was edged by host Washington & Jefferson College 1-0 in another non-league affair. The Scots outshot the Presidents by a 15-7 margin, but were held scoreless for the first time this season. Brown nearly matched her counterpart in goal, producing five saves on the afternoon. |
