After tying North Coast Athletic Conference preseason favorite Wittenberg University in its league lid-lifter, The College of Wooster will continue its quest for a conference title this week with two matches. On Wednesday, Oct. 3, Wooster will be at Hiram College (8-3, 0-0 NCAC), winners of three in a row, for the Terriers’ NCAC opener, starting at 4:30 p.m. It will mark the ninth time Hiram and Wooster have met on the women’s soccer pitch, and the Scots have been victorious each game, including a 4-0 shutout last fall. This Saturday, Oct. 6, Wooster will play host to Kenyon College (4-3-2, 0-0-1 NCAC), which is currently ranked No. 6 in the Great Lakes Region, according to the NCAA Div. III coaches’ poll, at 1 p.m. Kenyon and Wooster have been evenly matched throughout the years, as the Ladies hold a slight 11-10-2 edge in the all-time series following their 2-1 win in Gambier, Ohio, last season.
Last Week: The defense did not allow a goal, leading the Scots to a 1-0-1 week and moving their overall record to 8-2-1 on the season.
On Sept. 26, junior Letitia Clark (West Chester, Pa. / George School) scored 1:25 into overtime, lifting Wooster past John Carroll University 1-0 during the northeast Ohio schools’ annual match-up. During regulation there were few scoring opportunities by either offense, however in overtime, John Carroll immediately flirted with victory, bringing the ball into the Scots’ goal box. The Blue Streaks had a couple of chances, with one shot being deflected by senior ‘keeper Abby Brown (Copper Canyon, Texas / Marcus) and then some anxious moments went by before she was able to cover it up. Wooster immediately transitioned the ball the length of the field. Senior Kate Kiley (Dedham, Mass. / Noble and Greenough School) eventually gained possession on the left side, passed it to the right upper corner of the goal box, where Clark slid it past the charging John Carroll goalie and into the lower left of the net. It marked Clark’s seventh career goal and Kiley’s first career assist. Brown totaled four saves in posting her first shutout of the season.
On Sept. 29, Wittenberg University and Wooster battled to a draw for the second-straight year in their regular season match-up, this time with neither offense scoring. The host Tigers, ranked No. 9 nationally at the time in the NCAA Div. III coaches’ poll, held the advantage in shots (17-1), but Brown made six saves to preserve the 0-0 tie. |
