Four different players scored during a 6:11 time frame to open the game, as The College of Wooster women’s lacrosse team used a 5-0 run, and built a 7-2 lead and never looked back, en route to knocking off Seton Hill University by a 15-9 count in non-conference action Wednesday in Greensburg, Pa.
With the victory, the Fighting Scots move to 3-3 overall as they get set to begin North Coast Athletic Conference play at 2 p.m. this Saturday at Wittenberg University (3-3, 0-1 NCAC), while the Griffins dip to 3-6.
The Scots dominated the game’s initial minutes. Freshman Nina Dine scored two unassisted tallies, and goals by juniors Hillary Darragh and Taryn Higgins, along with senior Cassie Brown gave Wooster a quick 5-0 edge.
Seton Hill didn’t quit, however, as goals by Krista Ocilka and Kate Worthington found the back of the Wooster net, bringing the Griffins to within three (5-2). Seton Hill outscored Wooster 5-3, despite two goals from junior Carly Carey, over the final 19:27 of the opening half, and brought the game within three (8-5).
Much like the first half, Wooster owned the opening minutes of the second half. The Scots utilized goals from Brown, Dine, and Carey, and held a six-goal lead (11-5) with 17:29 left. Following a quick goal by Worthington for Seton Hill, the Scots scored four-straight tallies, two by Carey and two by Brown, and held off a late charge from the Griffins for the six-goal victory.
The Wooster defense turned in a fine performance. Higgins gobbled up five groundballs and chalked up four caused turnovers, while Romy Eberle totaled four groundballs and three caused turnovers. In the net, goalie Jamie Dannenberg stopped 11 Griffins’ shots in helping the Scots’ cause.
Carey led the Wooster scoring parade with five goals, giving her 23 on the season, while Brown finished with four scores. Also turning multiple-point games were Dine with three goals, Darragh with two goals and an assist, and Higgins with a goal and a helper.
Pacing Seton Hill was Ocilka with five goals and an assist. Additionally, Worthington tacked on two scores and a helper, while Ellen Einsporn tallied two goals.
Statistically, Wooster held a decisive advantage in shots (33-17), and forced Seton Hill into 29 turnovers, while committing just 13 of its own.
Julie Woodburn played the entire game in goal for the Griffins, allowing 15 goals and recording 15 saves.
