WOOSTER, Ohio - Despite erasing a two-goal deficit in its contest with the State University of New York at Fredonia, The College of Wooster women’s lacrosse team couldn’t thwart a late run by the Blue Devils, who rattled off a 4-0 spurt to end the game, and fell 11-7 in its first home contest at Carl Dale Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots (2-3) came out of the gates strong, netting the game’s first goal just 21 seconds in as Nina Dine assisted on a Hillary Darragh goal. SUNY Fredonia (3-1) knotted the score a little over three minutes later when Christie Zaganiaczyk scored on an assist from Laura Culhane.
Just over six minutes later, Wooster jumped out to a two-goal advantage (3-1) on scores by Carly Carey and Taryn Higgins exactly one minute apart on a pair of assists from Darragh.
The Blue Devils scored the next two goals, but Dine tallied an unassisted score with 1:52 remaining before halftime pulling the Scots to within one (5-4).
In similar fashion as it started the game, Wooster came out firing early in the second half when Carey found the back of the net with 27:48 left in the game and tied the game at 5-5. Over the next 10:25 of action, the two teams traded goals, with Wooster picking up single tallies from Dine and a free-position goal from Carey, which deadlocked the game at 7-7 with 17:23 showing on the clock.
However, the Blue Devils scored the final four goals of the contest and held the Wooster offense in check, securing the 11-7 non-conference victory.
Carey totaled three goals to lead Wooster, marking the fourth in five games this season she has posted at least a hat trick. Dine posted two scores, while Darragh finished three assists and Dine added one helper.
Junior Jamie Dannenberg made seven saves in goal for the Scots.
For SUNY Fredonia, Zaganiaczyk led all scorers with five goals, while Kelsey Lamb and Culhane tallied three and two, respectively.
Wooster looks to get back on the winning track Wednesday, April 2, when it travels to Greensburg, Pa., for a 5 p.m. showdown with the Seton Hill University Griffins.
