Scots Make it Five in a Row with 20-11 Thumping of Puget Sound
WOOSTER, Ohio - With five players totaling at least four points a piece and eight different players finding the back of the net, The College of Wooster women’s lacrosse team captured its fifth consecutive victory, this time a 20-11 non-conference win over the University of Puget Sound, as the Fighting Scots shook a slow start to the season to improve their overall record to 6-3. Four different Scots set or tied career marks in the contest, highlighted by a seven-point performance from Hillary Darragh, who netted three goals with four assists, while Emily Baab tied a career-high for points (6) with five goals and one assist. Also setting new personal marks was Cassie Brown, whose five points and four goals were both career-highs, and Scot goalkeeper Jamie Dannenberg’s 15 saves on the afternoon was also a personal best. The first period was essentially a back-and-forth battle between the two squads, with Carly Carey netting the game’s first two goals within the first 1:30 to give Wooster an early 2-0 lead, but a goal by the Loggers’ Katie Schlesinger gave Puget Sound (3-8) its first goal of the game a little over 5:30 into action. Jess Baylor slipped a shot past the Loggers’ goalie Erienne Pedersen at the 24:46 mark, beginning a 3-0 scoring spurt for the Scots, before Karen Hansen would net the first of her four goals on the afternoon, making the score 7-3 with 19:56 left to play in the period. The teams would trade goals through the rest of the period as Wooster held onto a 10-7 halftime advantage. The Scots took over in the second period, scoring three consecutive goals to open the game and push the lead to six (13-7) before Puget Sound responded with two tallies of its own, the second coming at the 19:58 mark to bring itself back in the game. However, Wooster out-scored the Loggers 7-2 the rest of the way to catapult itself to the win. For the contest, the Scots held a 35-21 shot advantage over the visitors, while also scooping up 31 groundballs to the Loggers’ 18. In addition to the offensive production of Darragh, Baab and Brown, Wooster also received multi-goal performances from Carey (3 goals) and Taryn Higgins (2 goals), while Annie Steward and Baylor chalked up four points, each with three assists and a goal. Puget Sound was paced by Hansen and Julie Weis, who each tallied four goals, while Schlesinger ended the day with two scores. Defensively for the Loggers, Pedersen totaled 11 saves in goal, while playing all 60 minutes. Wooster returns to North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, when it travels to Oberlin College for a 4:30 p.m. match-up with the Yeowomen. |
