Scots Explode for 24-2 Walloping of Fontbonne
WOOSTER, Ohio - Only 1:42 had expired from the scoreboard at Carl Dale Field and The College of Wooster women’s lacrosse team had already begun an offensive barrage, scoring three goals within the time span, including an Emily Baab net-finder just 12 seconds into action and tallies by Cassie Brown and Carly Carey, en route to a 24-2 drubbing of visiting Fontbonne University on Sunday afternoon. The last time Wooster scored 24 goals in a game was March 31, 2001, when the Scots defeated Medaille College 24-1. The Fighting Scots (2-3) stormed out to an 8-0 lead after 10 full minutes of action, with Carey scoring three consecutive goals during the span, and it wasn’t until the 17:43 mark when the Griffins (0-8) would finally find the back of the net on a goal by Chelsea Sickman. Wooster’s offensive showcase would continue throughout the remainder of the half, as the Scots blew open the game even further, scoring six more goals before Fontbonne could answer again on another Sickman goal, and then tacking on an additional three score before the half, taking a 17-2 cushion into the intermission. The second period saw the Scots empty their bench, playing mostly with reserves, and still continue to put points on the board, adding seven goals during the period, including two tallies by Megan Thomas exactly 20 seconds apart to give Wooster its final goals of the day with 7:18 left on the clock. For the game, 15 different Wooster players found the back of the net, led by Carey and Lauren DeZellar, who had three goals a piece. Also recording multiple-goal performances were Brown, Hillary Darragh, Baab, Emmy Cassagnol and Thomas, while Brown and Annie Steward each contributed two assists in the outing. Equally as impressive is the Scot defense that held its counterparts scoreless throughout the entire second half and limited Fontbonne to only seven shots on the afternoon, while Wooster was busy bombarding the Griffins’ net with 48 shots of its own. The Scot defensive front also collected 18 goundballs in the win and chalked up two caused turnovers, including two by Britta Harman. In goal for Wooster, Jamie Dannenberg had a relatively easy day, recording four saves, while Griffin starting goalie Kasey Thompson was credited with 12 saves and Emily Schallenberg came on in relief in the second half to record six saves. The Scots look to pick up another win on April 6 when they host Seton Hill in a 4:30 p.m. match-up at Carl Dale Field. |
