A strong defensive effort, led by sophomore goalkeeper Nicki Hunt’s career-high 22 saves, keyed The College of Wooster’s 8-5 victory at Wittenberg University on Wednesday (April 7), as the Scots improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The win sets up a showdown with rival Denison University (4-4, 2-0 NCAC) this Friday afternoon at Wooster. The Scots and Denison have won the last five NCAC championships.

On Wednesday, Wittenberg held a 32-21 shot advantage, but Wooster never trailed on the scoreboard and was ahead by multiple goals during the final 18:59.

One big offensive surge by the Scots proved to be the difference in the low-scoring affair. During a 5:17 stretch early in the second half, Wooster scored three goals, including two from Helena Iaquinta, to take a 6-3 lead.

Iaquinta finished with a hat trick, Megan Sward scored two goals and assisted on another, and Ashley Arnold produced a one-goal, one-assist game to lead the Scots.

Kari Thomas had two goals in the loss, while Wittenberg goalie Clare Bucheit made 12 saves.

The Denison-Wooster contest, which will give one squad the early edge on top seeding for the NCAC Tournament, is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
