The College of Wooster women’s lacrosse team played a close first half with NCAA Div. II and host Mercyhurst College on Thursday afternoon (March 25), but Mercyhurst’s offense exploded for six of the first seven goals in the second and the Lakers held off a late Wooster rally to win 8-6.

Wooster, which drops to 2-2 after its first game on the northern schedule, had led 2-1 at halftime.

Four of Mercyhurst’s scores during the second stanza came during a seven-minute stretch.

Leading scorer Megan Sward, who totaled 13 points in the Scots’ three games played in Florida, found the back of the Laker net twice Thursday, as did Erica Frazier-Young. Also chipping in goals in the loss were Allison Mione and Mary Risley.

For Mercyhurst (4-4), Dara Liberati recorded a five-point game (two goals, three assists) and Andrea Bement put in three goals for a hat trick.

Nicki Hunt played all 60 minutes in net for Wooster, making nine saves, while her counterpart, Jessica Bunker tallied 10 saves.

The Scots will look to avoid their first three-game losing streak since the 2001 season on Saturday (March 27), when they make their home and North Coast Athletic Conference debuts against Ohio Wesleyan University (4-0) at 11 a.m.
