attack. |
The College of Wooster womens lacrosse team used a balanced
offensive attack and another fine outing from goalie Nicki Hunt
to soundly defeat Kenyon College 13-4 Wednesday afternoon in Gambier,
Ohio, as the Scots took sole possession of first-place in the North
Coast Athletic Conference.
The two teams had entered the game unbeaten in league play.
Wooster (7-2, 4-0 NCAC), now two victories shy of the regular
season championship and No. 1 seed of the NCAC Tournament, exploded
for the first five goals of Wednesdays match-up. Top scorer
Megan Sward found the back of the net twice and assisted
on two other goals during that early burst.
After leading 6-1 at halftime, the Scots put the game out of
reach with the first three scores of the second, which included
one of Ashley Arnolds game-high four goals.
Along with Arnold and Sward, who finished with seven points
on a hat trick and three assists, Wooster received multi-point outings
from Erica Frazier-Young (two goals) and Helena Iaquinta
(one goal, one assist).
Kenyon (6-3, 2-1 NCAC), which was led by Annie Huntoons
pair of goals, actually outshot the Scots 36-22. However, Hunt,
who is among the national statistical leaders in save percentage,
was up to the challenge again. She had 20 saves to improve her season
percentage to .661.
Before it attempts to clinch the NCAC title, Wooster will play
a pair of non-league foes this weekend, hosting SUNY Brockport (6-3)
on Friday (April 16) and undefeated and No. 9 ranked Colorado College
(9-0) Sunday morning (April 18).
