Megan Sward scored five-straight goals to help Wooster down Denison 15-10.

Sophomore attacker Megan Sward scored five-straight goals during a 7:44 stretch to break open what had been a 7-7 game, and The College of Wooster went on to cruise to a 15-10 decision over rival Denison University in North Coast Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse play Friday afternoon (April 9).

The two teams have combined to win the last five NCAC championships, and they’re expected to finish at the top again this spring. But now, thanks to a 7-0 run during the middle of Friday’s second half, Wooster (6-2, 3-0 NCAC) has the upperhand with three league games left.

Through the first 39 minutes, neither team had led by more than two goals. Then, Sward’s barrage started at the 21-minute mark of the second. Three of her goals were on free position attempts, while the other two were unassisted as well. Sward’s five goals marked a career-high.

Senior attacker Lizzie Newton continued the Scots’ run, chipping in two unassisted goals of her own, one on another free position shot, which made it 14-7.

Denison (4-5, 2-1 NCAC) went on a late 3-1 rally for the final five-goal margin.

Newton was Wooster’s second-leading scorer, finishing with four goals on the afternoon, while other multi-point producers in the win were junior attacker Erica Frazier-Young (two goals) and junior midfielder Ashley Arnold (one goal, one assist).

Coming off a career-best outing, sophomore goalie Nicki Hunt was impressive again, tallying 12 saves before getting pulled with six minutes remaining.

Krissy Frost with three goals and Sarah Lowell with two goals and one assists were the Big Red’s primary scorers.

The Scots can take another step towards locking up the conference regular season championship on Wednesday (April 14), when they travel to Kenyon College (6-2, 2-0 NCAC) for a 4:30 p.m. game.
