After being upset at home by Wittenberg University on Thursday (April 17), The College of Wooster went on the road and won a key North Coast Athletic Conference contest against Denison University 9-8 in women's lacrosse action at Granville, Ohio, on Saturday afternoon (April 19).
Wooster (8-2, 4-1 NCAC) and rival Denison (7-5, 3-1 NCAC) are now tied atop the league standings, but with the Scots holding the head-to-head tiebreaker if they should share the regular season title.
The host Big Red held a 4-2 lead at the break, but Wooster quickly tied it within the opening five minutes of the second half (4-4). Denison bumped its advantage back up to two (6-4), however, the Scots went on to score three of the next four to even things up once again (7-7).
After Denison retook the lead just :35 later on a Stephanie Pratzner free position goal, Wooster knocked in back-to-back shots from Megan Sward and Allison Mione during a :22 stretch, which turned out to be the tying- and winning-goals, as the final 9:32 were played without a score.
Nobody on the field scored more than two goals on the day. Beth Hemminger of the Scots and Pratzner led the way, each tallying two goals and one assist.
Also for Wooster, Megan Kennedy, Mione, and Sward accounted for two scores apiece, while Courtney Abrams (two goals) and Molly Lamdin (one goal, one assist) had multi-point outings in the loss.
The Scots did hold a shot advantage of 25-23, but Big Red goalie Abbe Stewart came up with 10 saves, as did Wooster's Nicole Hunt, who played all 60 minutes.
The Scots are off until Thursday (April 24), when they play their final non-conference contest of the year. They will host Mercyhurst College (6-6) at 4 p.m.
