The College of Wooster scored seven unanswered goals in the second half to break open what had been a tightly-contested, defensive battle in defeating the State University of New York at Brockport 11-6 during non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday (March 30). Brockport State (1-1) was leading 5-4 early in the second half before the trio of Beth Hemminger, Lizzie Newton, and Emily White struck. Hemminger tied it at five at the 23:56 mark, White gave the Scots the lead :20 later, and Newton added back-to-back goals just over four minutes later to put them in control. After a nine-minute scoreless stretch, Hemminger added another and White put home two more for a hat trick, giving Wooster a commanding six-goal advantage (11-5) with 6:48 left. The first 20 minutes of the game were very defensive-oriented with the Scots' Miriam Esber's goal in the first 90 seconds being the lone point. Both squads' offense picked up over the final one-third of the opening stanza and they went into the break tied 3-3. Overall, White finished with three goals and one assist, Esber had three goals, Hemminger contributed two scores and an assist, and Newton produced two goals and an assist. Also for Wooster (2-2), Angela Arnold found the back of the net once and Jessica Bacon dished out one assist. Brockport State was led by Tina Sallustio's two goals. In goal, Scot senior Kim Christensen registered six saves on the afternoon, while two Golden Eagles' net minders combined for 17 saves. Next, Wooster will open North Coast Athletic Conference action against Ohio Wesleyan University at home on Tuesday (April 2) with the opening draw slated for 4:30 p.m. |
