After a busy stretch of four games in seven days during its spring break trip to California, The College of Wooster has a light week ahead with just one contest on its slate. That will be the Fighting Scots’ home opener this Saturday, March 29, when they welcome SUNY Fredonia (1-1) to Carl Dale Memorial Field at 2 p.m. The two teams played most recently during 2005, with Wooster earning a 13-10 victory in a game played at West Palm Beach, Fla.

Spring Break Recap: The Scots were in California, where they split four games against NCAA Div. III West Region competition.

On March 15, Wooster exploded out of the gates with a season-opening 18-3 win at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Freshman Nina Dine (Tuckahoe, N.Y. / E.C. Fieldston School) led the way with a four-point outing, scoring two goals and assisting on two others in her collegiate debut, while three other Scots – junior Carly Carey (Cummington, Mass. / Academy at Charlemont), junior Hillary Darragh (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Twp.), and freshman Jill Lee (Newton, Mass. / Brimmer and May School) – recorded hat tricks. Also with a three-point game (2 goals, 1 assist) was sophomore Becca Worthington (St. Louis Park, Minn. / St. Louis Park).

On March 17, Wooster’s offense continued to thrive, netting 10 goals in the first half and then using a four-goal run in the second to turn an 11-10 lead into a comfortable five-goal margin (15-10) en route to a 16-13 decision over host Whittier College. Carey matched her career high with a five-goal performance while also contributing an assist, and Worthington was a spark off the bench again, this time posting a hat trick. Darragh, sophomore Amy Denny (Stow, Ohio / Stow-Munroe Falls), and junior Taryn Higgins (Marblehead, Mass. / Marblehead) tossed in two goals apiece.

On March 19, the Scots dropped a tough 13-12 decision at the University of Redlands during a game that featured six ties. The final tie came when Wooster’s Carey knotted it 11-11 with exactly 10:00 to go in regulation, but then Redlands retook the momentum with a goal just :35 later and made it a two-goal cushion at the 4:19 mark. The Scots made one last charge, as Carey fed Darragh for a score to pull within one with 1:26 to play, but they couldn’t come up with the equalizer.

For the game, Carey threw in five goals and added an assist for the second consecutive game, equaling her career highs in both goals and points. Darragh had two goals and one assist, while Dine, Higgins, and Worthington each contributed one-goal, one-assist efforts.

On March 21, Wooster was uncharacteristically shutout in the second half, as Colorado College overcame a 9-4 halftime deficit and pulled out a 10-9 comeback victory. Offensively, Darragh and Dine registered two goals and one assist apiece, and Carey tallied a two-goal game. Also of note, Denny collected a game-high eight groundballs and junior goalkeeper Jamie Dannenberg (Framingham, Mass. / Framingham) had her best game of the trip with 14 saves.

NCAC Player of the Week: For her efforts last week, Carly Carey (Cummington, Mass. / Academy at Charlemont) was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for women’s lacrosse. Through four games, she has scored a squad-high 15 goals.
