Chilly Shooting, Spartans’ Second-Half Run Dooms Scots

The College of Wooster women's basketball team fought back from a 13-point first-half deficit against Case Western Reserve University, taking a one-point lead just under four minutes into the second half. However, the Spartans responded and pulled away, keeping Wooster at arm's length securing the 64-51 non-conference victory Saturday inside Horsburgh Gym.
After both teams struggled from the floor in the first half, the turning point came as the Spartans (5-3) rattled off a lengthy 14-0 run, turning a one-point deficit (30-29) with 14:05 remaining into a commanding 43-30 lead with 8:42 left, owning their largest advantage of the contest (50-34) following a pair of free throws by Ashleigh Tondo with 5:16 left.
Not giving up, the Scots (2-4) slowly chipped away at the Case double-digit lead, cutting the bulge to six (54-48) on a pair of free throw makes by sophomore Becca Hartsock with 1:50 left. In their comeback attempt, the visitors ran out of gas, as the Spartans nailed key shots down the stretch and secured the victory.
Despite its inability to put the ball in the basket, connecting on just 15-of-61 attempts (24.6 percent) and 6-of-21 from three-point range (28.6 percent), Wooster went to work on the glass all afternoon keeping the game close, posting a season-high 47 caroms. Kaitlin Krister led the way with eight, while sophomore Kym Wenz and junior Meredith Wilson finished with seven and six, respectively.
For Wooster, Wenz tossed in a game-high 22 points on the offensive end, while Wilson accumulated 11 points.
Beth Andrasik led three Spartans in double figures with 18 points, while Tondo chipped in with 16 and Ashley Horton’s 14 points and nine boards off the bench came up just shy of a double-double in the victory. Additionally, Colleen Martin yanked down with a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with four points and six blocked shots.
Wooster, heading into its finals week, will take to the court again Friday, Dec. 14th when it plays host to the Arrows of Ursuline College (4-5) inside Timken Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
