Box Score

WOOSTER, Ohio — The College of Wooster women's basketball team, behind a balanced scoring attack, downed Ursuline 90-64 Saturday afternoon at Timken Gymnasium.

The win improves the Scots' record to 4-1 on the season, marking Wooster's first 4-1 start since 1998.

Highlighting the team effort for the Scots was reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week Kristen Rice (Wooster, Ohio / Northwestern), who broke the team record for blocks in one game with eight, surpassing the mark of seven held by several players. Rice also led Wooster in scoring with 18 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

Also reaching double figures for the Scots were junior Jen Flavin (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) and freshman Natalie Barone (Akron, Ohio / St. Thomas Aquinas), who each collected 16 points. Barone was a factor on defense as well, picking up six of the Scots' 15 steals in the game.

A surprise scorer in double figures was senior Suzanne Lucas (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid), who registered a career-high 10 points in just 13 minutes of action.

Wooster took control of the game midway through the first half, when a 13-0 run over a three-minute span turned a 23-15 Scot lead into a commanding 36-15 advantage. Wooster took a 47-32 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Arrows (0-8) got as close as 11 points (61-50) with 12:15 to play, but the Scots responded with a 17-4 run that put the game out of reach.

Wooster's defensive pressure forced Ursuline into 28 turnovers and 36 percent (25-of-70) shooting from the floor, and also resulted in a number of easy baskets on offense.

Statistically, Wooster shot 45 percent (34-of-76) from the field and hit 5-of-11 from three-point range. The Scots also outrebounded the Arrows 54-45.

Leading the way for Ursuline was Kayla Newsom, who finished with 13 points.

Wooster returns to action Tuesday, Dec. 17, when it travels to the Washington, D.C. area for a game with St. Mary's (Md.). The Scots will also play Trinity (D.C.) during this trip on December 19.
