Slow Start Ends Scot Women's Winning Streak at Three
Box Score
The College of Wooster women's basketball team got off to a slow start on Tuesday night (Dec. 17) in the first game of its Washington, D.C., trip and was never able to recover, as St. Mary's College of Maryland handed the Scots a 72-54 defeat.
Both squads entered the non-conference contest hot with Wooster riding a three-game win streak and St. Mary's having won five in a row, but the Seahawks were the only ones to keep their momentum.
St. Mary's (6-1) came out hitting on all cylinders, making seven of its first 11 shots from the floor in grabbing a 16-3 lead 5:56 into the action. On the other hand, the Scots (4-2) struggled for the entire opening half, hitting just 8-of-31 field goals (.258) and never pulling within single digits after the initial run.
Wooster did have some hope early in the second half. Junior Lindsey Schaaff hit a three-pointer on the first possession after the break, cutting the 36-19 halftime deficit down to 14. However, the Seahawks responded by building their lead back up to 20 (45-24) by the 17:08 mark and were never threatened again.
The Scots' leading scorer, senior center Kristen Rice (Wooster, Ohio / Northwestern), was the only one in double figures for the visitors. She finished with 14 points, four below her season average, as well as three blocked shots.
Other notables for Wooster included eight points from Molly Rallo (Aurora, Ohio / Beaumont School) and Suzanne Lucas' (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid Senior) team-high seven rebounds.
St. Mary's, which knocked down 45.6 percent of its shots from the floor for the game (26-of-57) and outboarded the Scots 50-34, were led by a pair of individual double-doubles. Mary Kate Lenz came off of the bench to score 14 points and grab 10 rebounds, while Adele Magnani had 10 of each.
Wooster will try and get back on the winning track Thursday (Dec. 19) against Trinity (D.C.) College.
