A 14-4 spurt to start the second half turned out to be the difference for The College of Wooster women's basketball team, as it beat Notre Dame College 86-73 on the road Wednesday night. After a fairly even first 20 minutes, in which Wooster (2-1) was ahead 35-30 at the break, the Scots balanced offensive attack took control of the game. Five different players scored during the run, which covered the first five minutes of the second stanza and ended with Wooster leading by 15 (49-34). Notre Dame (1-4) did not go completely away, cutting the lead to single digits on two occasions, however, the Scots had too much firepower, finishing the second with 51 points - just the eighth time in school history they have scored more than 50 in a half. All 15 players that dressed saw at least two minutes of action for Wooster and 12 got into the scorebook. Senior post player Kristen Rice led the way for the third-straight game with 19 points, while junior wing Jen Flavin contributed 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Six others scored between 6-9 points, including sophomore guard Sara Perry (North Ridgeville, Ohio / North Ridgeville), who had a game-high four assists, and sophomore forward Alexis Louttit (Lodi, Ohio / West Holmes), who produced a game-high four steals. Leaders for the Falcons were Amanda Blazetic, who had game-highs in points with 28, highlighted by 14-of-17 from the foul line, and rebounds with nine, and Kristin Wendolowski, who added 15 points. Statistically, the Scots shot .410 from the field (34-of-83), including an even .500 in the second half (19-of-38), while they held their hosts to a .371 percentage from the floor (23-of-62). Both teams had a busy night on the boards, as Wooster held a 50-45 rebounding edge. The Scots return home on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7), when they will host Allegheny College (2-3) in the teams' North Coast Athletic Conference opener. Tip-off between the two, who have developed a nice rivalry in which only once in the last eight games has one won by more than 10 points, is at 2 p.m.³ |
