Having played a game away from home for the first time this season in its last outing, The College of Wooster returns to Timken Gymnasium this Friday, Dec. 14, for a contest against Ursuline College (4-5). Wooster’s players will first be busy taking final exams during the week and then they’ll look to give head coach Lisa Campanell Komara her 100th victory at Wooster on Friday night. Ursuline and Wooster played eight times from the 2000-01 to 2005-06 seasons, with the Scots holding a 6-2 advantage, before taking a break from each other last year. Most recently, the Arrows upended Wooster 75-64 on Dec. 7, 2005. Friday’s tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Last Week: The Scots split two games, winning the more important of the two as they started out North Coast Athletic Conference play at 1-0. Overall, they are 2-4.

On Dec. 5, Wooster got past Oberlin College 72-69 in the teams’ conference opener, despite a second half comeback attempt by the visiting Yeowomen. Oberlin led 32-30 at halftime, but the Scots exploded for a 16-2 run early in the second, with freshman guard Taylor Keegan (Mohrsville, Pa. / Holy Name) hitting three 3-pointers during that key stretch, to take a seemingly comfortable 59-43 lead. The Yeowomen, though, scored nine unanswered points at one juncture and eventually pulled within two on three occasions (63-61, 65-63, 67-65). Keegan sealed the win for Wooster, knocking down another 3-pointer and 2-of-2 free throws in the final minute. Keegan’s 14 points were a team-high and included 4-of-6 3-point shooting, while also reaching double figures were Meredith Wilson (Washington Ct. House, Ohio / Miami Trace), Kaitlin Krister (Kent, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit), and Kym Wenz (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake) with 11, 10, and 10 points, respectively. Also of note, Colleen Goodwillie (Dublin, Ohio / Bishop Ready) had a game-high seven assists, compared to just one turnover.

On Dec. 8, the Scots fought back from a couple of early 13-point deficits (18-5, 23-10), taking the lead early in the second half (30-29), but host Case Western Reserve University would later pull away to a 64-51 non-league win. Wooster’s 30-29 lead turned out to be its only of the game, as the Spartans responded with a 17-2 run (46-32) and went on to the 13-point margin of victory. Wenz accounted for more than 40 percent of the Scots’ points, scoring 22, and Wilson chipped in with 11 points. Krister, who played just 18 minutes due to foul trouble, led the squad in rebounding with eight, and Priscilla Staples (Stoughton, Mass. / Fontbonne Academy) tallied four assists.
