Scots Host Westminster on Wednesday in Lone Game of Week
Fresh off its first victory of the season, The College of Wooster will look to start a winning streak this Wednesday, Nov. 28, when it hosts Westminster (Pa.) College (3-0) in the Fighting Scots’ lone game of the week. Westminster and Wooster have played four times over the last four years, with the Lady Titans winning three in a row, including 58-53 last season, after the Scots won their initial meeting 65-57. Wednesday’s tip-off at Timken Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m. Last Week: Wooster played and won its first regional game of the year, while improving to 1-2. On Nov. 25, sophomore guard Kym Wenz (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake) recorded her second career double-double, pouring in a career-high 26 points and totaling 10 rebounds, to lead the Scots past Lake Erie College 72-68 in non-conference action at Timken Gym. Wooster overcame several early turnovers, which were caused by Lake Erie’s full-court press, taking an 18-10 lead. Then, the Scots’ top-two players, Wenz and Kaitlin Krister (Kent, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit), both got into foul trouble, however, the rest of the team stepped up and maintained that lead into halftime (36-32). The Storm got hot early in the second half and took the lead shortly after Wenz went to the bench with her fourth foul around the 15-minute mark. Trailing by seven (55-48) at the 9:32 mark, Wooster inserted Wenz back into the game and she carried the squad to the four-point victory, scoring 15 of the Scots’ final 22 points. Overall, Wenz shot 8-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-3 3-pointers, and 8-of-10 at the charity stripe, in addition to the 10 boards during 26 minutes played. Krister had her second double-double in as many games with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Meredith Wilson (Washington Ct. House, Ohio / Miami Trace) provided a boost with 11 points, as did Colleen Goodwillie (Wooster, Ohio / Wooster), who made a key 3-pointer and passed out four assists with just one turnover. This and That: Through three games, Wooster’s Kym Wenz (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake) is leading the North Coast Athletic Conference in scoring average at 17.0 points, while Kaitlin Krister (Kent, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) ranks fifth in that category (13.7 ppg). They’re also both among the top-five in rebounding average, with Krister second (9.7 rpg) and Wenz fourth (8.0 rpg). Additionally, Krister leads the league in both field-goal percentage (.833; 15-of-18) and blocked shots (3.33 per game), and Priscilla Staples (Stoughton, Mass. / Fontbonne Academy) rates fifth in assists (3.67 per game) ... As a team, the Scots have been shooting the ball very well early on, as their .311 3-point percentage (19-of-61) and .766 free throw percentage (36-of-47) would be school records for a season, if they can maintain them. |
