The College of Wooster aims to bounce back from a tough weekend and get back in the race for the North Coast Athletic Conference title when it plays at Kenyon College (6-6, 3-0 NCAC) Wednesday, Jan. 9. It will be the Fighting Scots only contest of the week. Kenyon, winners of its first three league games, was picked by the media to win this year’s NCAC championship in the preseason poll. The Ladies, traditionally known for their defensive prowess, swept the Scots during 2006-07, however, both match-ups were close seven-point decisions (63-56 and 58-51). The all-time series between the two is close, with Wooster trailing 29-23. Please note Wednesday’s tip-off time at the Kenyon Athletic Center is 6 p.m.

Last Week: The Scots lost two conference games over the weekend, slipping to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC.

On Jan. 4, Kaitlin Krister (Kent, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) posted a double-double and Kym Wenz (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake) finished right around her scoring average, but it was not enough for Wooster, as Denison University secured an 82-56 victory in the teams’ NCAC affair at Granville, Ohio. The host Big Red were clicking on all cylinders early on, scoring on nine of their first 12 possessions en route to a 23-7 lead before eight minutes had elapsed. The Scots eventually settled down, maintaining the margin between 11 and 16 points for an extended stretch, but another late charge by Denison allowed the hosts to go into the break up by 21 (49-28). Wooster scored the first bucket of the second half only to see the Big Red account for the next 10 points to make it 59-30, and the lead never dipped below 20 the rest of the way. Krister’s third double-double consisted of 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She also led all players in blocked shots with three, while Wenz poured in 16 points, just two below her average.

On Jan. 5, the Scots surged out to early leads of 11-2 and 13-4 only to watch visiting Ohio Wesleyan University come storming back to take control inside Timken Gymnasium and hand Wooster a 61-48 loss. In addition to their early nine-point cushion, the Scots were still ahead 21-14 around the midway point of the opening half, however, their offense then went ice cold, only scoring five points the final nine minutes while falling behind 29-26 at the break. Wooster’s shooting woes continued into the second, as it added just nine points to the scoreboard during the next 15 minutes, and the Battling Bishops built an insurmountable margin. Wenz produced 16 points for the second-straight night, while Meredith Wilson (Washington Ct. House, Ohio / Miami Trace) and Krister contributed 11 and 10, respectively.

This and That: The Scots are leading the conference in 3-point percentage (.387; 79-of-204), and if they can maintain that mark, it would set a school record for a season. The previous high by a Wooster team in that category was a .310 percentage in 1989-90 ... Individually in the NCAC, sophomore Kym Wenz (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake) continues to rank as the top scorer (18.4 ppg). The last Scot to lead the league in scoring was exactly 10 years ago – Katie Montague (21.5 ppg in 1997-98). Wenz is also fifth in rebounding (7.0 rpg) from her shooting guard position, as well as ninth in field-goal percentage (.434), first in 3-point percentage (.564), fourth in free throw percentage (.792), and tied for 10th in steals (1.6 spg). In addition, sophomore post Kaitlin Krister (Kent, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) currently tops the league in blocked shots (2.2 bpg) and ranks second in rebounds (7.4 rpg), and sophomore point guard Priscilla Staples (Stoughton, Mass. / Fontbonne Academy) is sixth in assists (3.3 apg).
