Loehrke, Wenz Highlight Scotsê Four All-NCAC Selections
The College of Wooster women’s basketball team saw four of its members recognized by the North Coast Athletic Conference Tuesday when it released the 2006-07 All-NCAC Team, as voted on by league coaches. The Fighting Scots’ selections were headlined by senior post Carly Loehrke (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan), who landed first-team accolades, and freshman guard Kym Wenz (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake), who was named the NCAC’s Co-Newcomer of the Year. In addition, senior shooting guard Beth Besancon Sidle (Wooster, Ohio / Smithville) and freshman point guard Winnie Adrien (Selden, N.Y. / Blair Academy – N.J.) joined Wenz with honorable mention on the all-conference team. Loehrke, who also was first-team last season and a second-team honoree as a sophomore, was among the top of the NCAC in several statistical categories, leading the league in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and field-goal percentage (.600) as well as ranking fourth in scoring (14.2 ppg) and third in blocks (1.6 bpg). She also contributed 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Loehrke ends her impressive four-year career as Wooster’s second-leading scorer (1,338 points) and third-leading rebounder (805), in addition to sitting atop the Scots’ record book in field-goal percentage (.550) and ranking fifth in free throw percentage (.775) and third in blocked shots (122). Wenz, who becomes the first Wooster player to earn the Newcomer-of-the-Year award since Nara DeJesus (1999-00), had a breakout campaign, finishing seventh in the NCAC scoring race at 11.8 points per game and fourth in free throw percentage (.755). She added averages of 4.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.7 steals, all while shooting just under 40 percent from the field (.384), including 33-of-102 from 3-point range (.324). Noteworthy, Wenz was the Scots’ leading scorer in 11 of 26 games during the season. Besancon Sidle picked up the first postseason honor of her career after playing a key role in leading Wooster to its first winning season since 1992-93. She was the Scots’ third-highest scorer with 9.4 points per outing, many of which came via 3-pointers (44-of-160). Besancon Sidle tallied 3.3 boards, 1.9 assists, and 1.6 steals as well. During her final home game, she connected on the 100th 3-pointer of her career – just the second in school history to reach that milestone – and ended up with 101 3-pointers, to go with averages of 7.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Adrien, who was the NCAC Newcomer of the Year and first-team All-NCAC as a soccer player last fall, has now been tabbed with a conference honor in basketball. In her first season on the hardwood, Adrien was a terror to opposing point guards defensively, ranking first in the league in steals (2.33 spg). She also led the Scots in assists (2.2 apg), to go with averages of 8.2 points and 3.2 rebounds. Adrien saved some of her best play for the end, highlighted by a season-high 18 points against Wittenberg University Feb. 17, which sent Wooster to its first victory over the Tigers since the 1997-98 campaign. As a team, the Scots went 14-12 overall under 10th-year head coach Lisa Campanell Komara, marking the program’s best record since also finishing two games above .500 in 1992-93 (13-11). Wooster finished in a tie for fifth in the nine-team NCAC via a 9-7 mark, and was the No. 6 seed for the NCAC tourney, in which it dropped a 59-42 decision to Allegheny College in the quarterfinals. |
