Port, Loehrke Named to Academic All-District Teams
Standout College of Wooster basketball players Tom Port (Avon Lake, Ohio / Avon Lake) and Carly Loehrke (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) also excel in the classroom, and for their respective efforts, they were selected to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Port earned second-team honors, marking the fifth year in a row Wooster’s men’s program has had a representative on the prestigious list (Kyle Witucky in 2006, Matt Schlingman in 2005, 2004, and 2003), and Loehrke picked up third-team recognition for the second year in a row on the women’s team. A preseason All-American (Street & Smith’s), Port has led the Fighting Scots to a 19-3 overall record, a one-game lead in the North Coast Athletic Conference (12-1), and a No. 5 national ranking (D3hoops.com) this year. He’s among the top-10 in the NCAC in seven key categories – scoring (6th, 15.8 ppg), rebounding (10th, 6.2 rpg), field-goal percentage (8th, .533), 3-point percentage (5th, .433), assists (4th, 3.1 apg), blocked shots (10th, 0.8 bpg), and steals (9th, 1.4 spg) – and is averaging a team-leading 29.5 minutes. Earlier this season, Port, who has averaged 14.7 points and 6.2 rebounds during his career, became just the fifth in school history to surpass 1,500 points and is just 10 shy of moving into third-place on Wooster’s scoring list, currently with 1,584 points. He’s been steadily moving up the Scots’ charts in other categories, too, ranking third in 3-pointers made (198), fourth in assists (358), and fifth in blocks (102), all while helping the team to a 98-14 record (.875) since 2003-04. The son of Craig and Nancy Port, Tom is majoring in psychology with a minor in history and plans on going to law school. He has been a member of the Dean’s List and volunteers with the Ohio Reads program. Loehrke has been one of the premier players in the conference again, as the soon-to-be three-time All-NCAC honoree is scoring 13.7 points and grabbing 8.0 boards per game. She ranks as the league leader in field-goal percentage (.599) for the second time in three seasons and is also first in rebounding, as well as fourth in scoring, third in blocks (1.7 bpg), and 10th in steals (1.9 spg). For her career, Loehrke is Wooster’s second all-time leading scorer at 1,271 points and she also could finish second in rebounding, currently fourth with 771 boards. A highly-efficient shooter, Loehrke ranks first in field-goal percentage (.547) and fifth in free throw percentage (.775), in addition to third in blocked shots (118). The daughter of Mark Loehrke and Judy Johnson, Carly is a communication sciences and disorders major with a minor in psychology. She has made the Dean’s List six times, regularly volunteers in the community, including Scots In Service and Ohio Reads, and intends to join the Peace Corps upon graduation. The Academic All-District Teams are determined by CoSIDA after a review of nominations of key players with a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA from the college division (NCAA Div. II and III, and NAIA) in Wooster’s five-state district (Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee). |
