Wooster 1-3 in 6th Annual Kilt Classic

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster volleyball team took home fifth-place honors at during the 6th Annual Kilt Classic on Saturday afternoon in Timken Gymnasium. The Fighting Scots finished 1-3 on the weekend, picking up their lone victory during Friday night's second session of play.
Mt. Union College won the tournament's championship going 4-0 during Friday and Saturday’s action, while fellow Ohio Athletic Conference school Muskingum College took the runner-up honors with a 3-1 mark. Alma College ended with a 2-2 mark and took third by virtue of a 3-0 victory on Saturday over Carnegie Mellon University, who also finished 2-2. Westminster College finished play with an 0-4 record.
Action began on Friday night with the host Scots taking on Alma. Alma took the first game of the match, winning by 30-28 and 30-23 scores. Wooster fought back and took game three by a 30-23 count. Alma ended the home team’s chance at a comeback with a 30-21 win in game four.
Wooster rebounded during its second match of the night, taking game one easily over Westminster, 30-17. Game two saw the Titans get some revenge, winning by a score of 31-29. Wooster answered back and took the final two games by a tally of 30-25 and 30-19. The Scots’ offensive attack was led by Megan Earle with 28 kills in 53 attempts with six errors for a .415 hitting percentage.
The Fighting Scots would next face-off against Mt. Union in Saturday morning’s play. The Purple Raiders came out of the gates, winning the first two games by 30-9 and 30-17 tallies. Wooster, however, would answer the call and dug deep, winning game three, 30-26, before Mt. Union claimed the victory with a 30-16 victory in game four.
In its final match of the weekend, the Scots fell to Muskingum in four games, dropping the first by a 30-23 score before coming back to take game two, 30-21. Game three was a nail biter, with the Muskies narrowly escaping with a 31-29 win. Wooster hung tough in game four, as Muskingum was victorious 30-24.
Leading the way for the Scots during the weekend was defensive ace Ali Drushal racking up 141 digs from her libero position. She added five service aces and earned herself a spot on the all-tournament team.
Earle led Wooster in kills (63), while Erin Wright posted the team-high in blocks and added 46 kills. KateLynn Riley gave the Scots’ offense a boost with 53 kills on the weekend.
Senior setter Heather Wolff paced the offense with 11.50 assists per game during the two days of action to go with 18 kills, five service aces, and 37 digs.
Amanda Kohler of Mt. Union was selected as the tournament most valuable player, while Rebecca Bruning of Alma, Samantha Carter of Carnegie Mellon, Jessica McKenzie of Muskingum and Jessica Cooper of Westminster round out the rest of the all-tournament team.
The Scots resume competition on Wednesday in their first North Coast Athletic Conference match of the year at home against Hiram College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
