For the second-straight season, The College of Wooster volleyball team finished in third-place out of eight teams at its own Kilt Classic held Friday and Saturday (Sept. 5-6) at Timken Gymnasium, while Marietta College dropped only two games in five matches to win the event.

The Scots (4-6) began the tourney with a pair of dominating victories on Friday night, sweeping past Notre Dame College of Ohio and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg by scores of 30-17, 30-25, 31-29 and 30-22, 30-11, 30-13, respectively.

Saturday did not go as well for Wooster, losing its final match of pool play to Marietta, however, the Scots were one of the teams to get a game off of the eventual champions — 30-21, 27-30, 30-23, 30-24. Wooster followed that up with another 3-1 setback in the semifinals to St. Mary’s (Ind.) College (30-24, 26-30, 30-26, 31-29), but bounced back in another four-game match, this time defeating Westminster (Pa.) College 30-26, 30-25, 24-30, 30-26 in the consolation contest.

St. Mary’s went on to lose in four to the Pioneers in the finals — 30-24, 30-23, 22-30, 30-27.

Tiffany Rice was Wooster’s representative on the all-tournament team. On the weekend, the 5-10 sophomore outside hitter totaled 63 kills against just 11 errors, as well as six service aces, 13 digs, and four blocks.

Other Scots with big statistical weekends were sophomore setter Mary-Kate Fowkes, who passed out 215 assists, junior libero Becky Rohlfs, who dug out 71 balls, and freshmen hitters Erin Schaffner and Ashley Quisenberry, who recorded 63 and 41 kills, respectively.

Next, Wooster will resume dual-match action on Tuesday (Sept. 9) against Heidelberg College (5-5), which finished in fifth-place at the Kilt Classic. The match will be at Timken Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
