Spikers Place Third in Their Own Tourney

The College of Wooster volleyball team cruised past West Liberty State College 32-30, 30-24, 30-23 in the winners' consolation bracket to take third at the inaugural Kilt Classic this weekend (Sept. 6-7), while Capital University won the event with a 3-1 decision over Westminster College in the final.

Wooster swept through its Pool A play, cleanly defeating La Roche College 30-22, 30-14, 30-21 and West Liberty State 30-20, 30-14, 32-30 on Friday night, and Wilmington College 30-19, 30-21, 30-19 on Saturday morning. It was when the teams broke up into bracket play that the Scots ran into trouble, falling 30-14, 30-18, 30-26 to Westminster, the second-place squad out of Pool B.

Sophomore Becky Rohlfs landed all-tournament team honors for Wooster, compiling 76 assists, 25 digs, 19 service aces, and five kills. Fellow setter Beth Moore was also effective on the weekend, contributing 81 assists and 28 digs to the cause.

The Scots' top hitter was Erin Donnell, who finished the five matches with 54 kills against 13 errors. She also added 29 digs, while Tiffany Rice, Katie Marco, and Allison Kovacs were next in kills with 41, 31, and 29, respectively.

Also noteworthy for Wooster, Marco produced a team-high 22 total blocks, including 10 solos, and Mary-Kate Fowkes was effective with 46 digs, 16 kills, and 13 aces.

Capital, which posted a 28-30, 30-23, 30-22, 30-21 comeback victory for the championship, was led by tournament MVP Sarah Simpson and Brittany Heppner, a member of the all-tournament team.

Runner-up Westminster was represented on the all-tourney team by Katie Spehar and Suzanne Fitz, while also garnering honors was Julie Kocher of West Liberty State.

The Scots, now 6-4 overall, hit the road next week, starting with a match on Tuesday (Sept. 10) at Heidelberg College (4-4).
