Donnell Stars in Volleyball's Opening Tournament
The College of Wooster debuted its 2002 volleyball squad this weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) at the highly-competitive Skyline Chili Classic X, hosted by Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky., and the young Scots saw mixed results with one win in four matches. On Saturday, Wooster played well, stretching the eventual tournament champion Adrian College to five games before succumbing 27-30, 30-19, 30-21, 28-30, 15-11. In fact, the Scots were the only team at the event that was able to push Adrian to the maximum number of games. Wooster then defeated Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relatively handily 25-30, 32-30, 30-25, 30-18. The Scots were swept on Sunday, dropping a four-game decision to Albion College by counts of 30-27, 30-20, 23-30, 30-22 and then being swept by perennial power Thomas More 30-27, 30-19, 30-16. Individually, Wooster was paced by the play of senior side hitter Erin Donnell, who was voted on to the all-tournament team. On the weekend, she totaled 58 kills for an average of 3.62 per game and a hitting percentage of .250, leading the Scots in each of those categories. She also added 43 digs. Two other Wooster hitters pounded down 20-plus kills, as Tiffany Rice and Michelle Erickson got their collegiate careers off to good starts. Rice tallied 37 kills and a .248 hitting percentage, while Erickson had 22 successful spikes. Sharing the setting duties again were returnees Beth Moore and Becky Rohlfs. Moore, a senior, had 84 assists to go along with 37 digs, while Rohlfs contributed 77 helpers as well as 28 digs. Defensively, freshmen Mary-Kate Fowkes and Katie Marco paced the Scots with 56 digs and 18 total blocks, respectively. Wooster gets right back into action on Tuesday (Sept. 3) with a non-conference contest at Case Western Reserve University (3-2) at 7 p.m. |
