Scots to Begin NCAC Play Before Another Weekend Tourney

The College of Wooster will attempt to start the North Coast Athletic Conference season on a positive note before playing in its third weekend tournament. On Wednesday, Sept. 12, Wooster will host Hiram College (7-1, 0-0 NCAC) at Timken Gymnasium in the teams’ league lid-lifter, starting at 7 p.m. Hiram, which has reached the NCAA Div. III Tournament the last two years, swept the season series from the Fighting Scots last fall, however, Wooster won one of three meetings in 2005. This Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15, the Scots will be in western Pennsylvania for the Westminster Invitational. Wooster is scheduled to take on host Westminster College (2-6) Friday at 3 p.m., followed later in the day with a match versus Muskingum College (7-2). On Saturday, Wooster will play Penn State Behrend (6-2) and Oberlin College (1-3) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
Last Week: The Scots hosted a weekend tourney, in which they won one match to move their overall record to 2-6.
On Sept. 7-8, Wooster finished in fifth-place at its own Kilt Classic, held in Timken Gymnasium, as the Scots went 1-3. All four matches Wooster played went four games, with the Scots losing to Alma College (28-30, 23-30, 30-23, 21-30) and beating Westminster (30-17, 29-31, 30-25, 30-19) on Friday evening. Saturday saw Wooster match-up with two Ohio Athletic Conference opponents, dropping decisions to Mt. Union College (9-30, 17-30, 30-26, 16-30) and Muskingum College (23-30, 30-21, 29-31, 24-30). Leading the Scots throughout the weekend was junior defensive ace Ali Drushal (Lakeville, Ohio / West Holmes), who averaged 8.88 digs per game en route to a spot on the all-tourney team. Junior Megan Earle (Middleburg Hts., Ohio / Midpark) paced the attack with 63 kills, including 28 and a .415 hitting percentage against Westminster, while sophomore KateLynn Riley (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) and senior Erin Wright (Akron, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) contributed 53 and 46 kills, respectively. Wright was also the team leader in total blocks (18). Additionally, senior setter Heather Wolff (Mansfield, Ohio / Madison Comprehensive) averaged 11.50 assists per game.
