Having locked up third-place in the North Coast Athletic Conference, and thus, the No. 3 seed for the NCAC Tournament, The College of Wooster will use this week’s two league matches to tune up for the postseason. On Wednesday, Oct. 24, Wooster will be at Ohio Wesleyan University (11-14, 4-7 NCAC), currently in a tie for fifth, for a 7 p.m. match-up. The Fighting Scots needed four games to dispatch Ohio Wesleyan 30-20, 23-30, 30-27, 32-30 earlier this fall (Oct. 2). Wooster will also be on the road Saturday, Oct. 27, at Denison University (10-12, 4-7 NCAC), with match time at 1 p.m. Denison, which lost to the Scots in four (30-23, 30-28, 34-36, 30-21 on Oct. 6) as well, enters this week in a tie for fifth-place with Ohio Wesleyan, and they are aiming for the fourth spot into the NCAC tourney, along with Earlham College (11-14, 5-7 NCAC).
Last Week: Wooster swept both of its matches, moving back to the .500 mark (13-13) for the first time since it was 1-1, as well as clinching third-place in the NCAC (8-4).
On Oct. 16, the Scots easily prevailed over visiting Allegheny College 30-23, 30-26, 30-10. Highlighting the match was a 19-0 run during game three, with junior standout Ali Drushal (Lakeville, Ohio / West Holmes) serving 18-straight points. That marked the eighth-highest total of consecutive points served in NCAA Div. III history (using the current 30-point scoring system). Also during the match, Drushal became the school’s career leader in digs with 2,185, surpassing Mary Kate Fowkes (2,156 from 2002-05). Aiding the Wooster cause were junior Megan Earle (Middleburg Hts., Ohio / Midpark), who tallied 11 kills and 18 digs, senior Erin Wright (Akron, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit), who nailed down a team-best 12 kills, and senior Heather Wolff (Mansfield, Ohio / Madison
Comprehensive), who passed out 45 assists.
On Oct. 19, the Scots were too much for Oberlin College, sweeping the visitors 30-24, 30-28, 30-26. Wright led Wooster with 11 kills, while sophomore KateLynn Riley (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) chipped in 10. Wolff produced a solid all-around night, distributing 35 assists, in addition to six kills, nine digs, and three total blocks. Also of note, Drushal had a squad-leading 29 digs, followed by Earle and junior Abbie Casey (Prospect, Ohio / Marion Pleasant) with 15 and 10, respectively.
