Scots to Host 5th Annual Kilt Classic Friday and Saturday

Coming off a 2-2 finish at the season-opening Capital Invitational, The College of Wooster volleyball team will play host to its own tournament, the 5th annual Kilt Classic, this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9, in its lone action of the week. This year?s event brings in seven other squads N Bluffton Univ., Malone College, Mt. Union College, Roberts Wesleyan College, St. Vincent College, Urbana University, and Waynesburg College N to Timken Gymnasium. Pool play begins Friday at 6 p.m., while Saturday?s festivities start at 9 a.m. The Fighting Scots will be featured in the same group as Bluffton, Malone, and Roberts Wesleyan. Last season, Wooster finished a program-best second in the Kilt Classic, falling to Urbana in three close games in the championship match.

Last Week: On Sept. 1-2, the Scots earned a pair of five-game victories, highlighting their season-opening weekend at the Capital Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. Wooster?s 2006 debut was a 30-28, 22-30, 19-30, 30-24, 15-5 victory over DePauw University and the Scots closed the tourney with a 20-30, 34-32, 24-30, 30-17, 15-13 triumph against Otterbein College. In between, Wooster fell to host Capital University in four (30-22, 30-11, 11-30, 30-21) and Heidelberg College in three (30-28, 30-21, 30-24).
Leading the Scots was Carolyn Ciriegio (Covington, Ohio / Covington), who was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.47 kills on a .230 attack percentage. She also contributed 34 digs and six total blocks. Fellow veteran Erin Schaffner (North Canton, Ohio / GlenOak) smacked down 3.06 kills per game, including 18 kills against both DePauw and Otterbein. Setting the ball was newcomer Abbie Casey (Pleasant, Ohio / Marion Pleasant), who recorded 144 assists over the four matches. Defensively, libero Ali Drushal (Lakeville, Ohio / West Holmes) and middle hitter Ashley Quisenberry (Springfield, Ohio / Springfield Catholic Central) paced Wooster. Drushal averaged 5.18 digs per game, while Quisenberry ended points on blocks 23 times over the weekend. She added 3.12 digs and shared team honors in service aces (8) with Casey.
