WOOSTER, Ohio — The College of Wooster volleyball team was picked to finish in the same place that it wound up in last year — fifth — in the North Coast Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll, announced the league office on Tuesday.

Wooster received 43 points from the eight head coaches who voted, while six-time defending champion Wittenberg University is the favorite again, having earned seven first-place votes and 71 of 72 points. Allegheny College, slated second with 61 markers, received the remaining first-place tally.

Denison University (55) and Hiram College (47) were just ahead of the Scots, who went 20-16 last fall and will sport a very young team in 2003 — one junior, four sophomores, and five freshmen — in the vote.

Rounding out the poll were Ohio Wesleyan University (34), Kenyon College (21), Earlham College (16), and Oberlin College (12) in the No. 6 through No. 9 slots, respectively.

Wooster begins its fourth campaign under head coach Terri Mason this weekend (Aug. 30-31) at the River City Tournament, hosted by Marietta College. It will be an eight-team field.
