Lori Schimmel has built The College of Wooster softball program from scratch into a regular contender in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Now entering her 10th year as the head coach, Schimmel has 139 wins to her credit while helping the Fighting Scots to three top-three finishes in the NCAC.

Schimmel spent one year leading the school’s club softball team and then was named the head varsity coach in August of 1999. After going 6-17 during 2000 – its first-year of varsity competition since 1986 – Wooster advanced to the championship game of the NCAC Tournament and went 20-19 the very next season. The Scots also placed second in the NCAC and won another 20 games in 2002 (20-16), and their other top-three showing in the conference came more recently as they tied for second during 2005, which led to Schimmel collecting NCAC co-Coach-of-the-Year honors.

Prior to coming to Wooster, where she also is the video coordinator of the athletic department, Schimmel worked as a softball and basketball coach at Vincentian Academy in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pa., for four years, including two as the head softball coach. Additional coaching experience came during her undergraduate days when she was a student assistant in softball for a season at Bethany College.

As a player, Schimmel excelled, earning a spot on the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference First Team every year she played (1990-93). She was named the PAC Pitcher of the Year in 1991 and finished with a 1.17 ERA for her career, ranking second in Bison history in that category. Schimmel, who graduated cum laude from Bethany in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2007.
