Scot Tennis Kicks Off 2004 With Dominating Performance Over Wabash
The College of Wooster tennis team made its 2004 debut a good one Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21), sweeping past visiting Wabash College 7-0. Though the match was against a conference member, it doesn't count in the league standings because the North Coast Athletic Conference is divided into two five-team divisions for men's tennis. Wooster (1-0) had a relatively easy time with Wabash (3-3), winning all three in doubles for that point and then taking five of the six singles in straight-sets. The Scots' nationally-ranked Nilesh Saldanha prevailed 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, while making his collegiate debut at No. 2 was freshman Will Morrison, who shutout his opponent in the first set (6-0) and then needed to win a tiebreak 7-2 in the second. Wooster veterans Alec Garnett, Nikhil Gonsalves, Chris Mickelson, and Cyrus Karimian completed the sweep at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2), No. 4 (6-1, 6-3), No. 5 (5-7, 6-1, 6-4), and No. 6 (6-2, 6-1), respectively. Also noteworthy, another Scot debut came in doubles, as freshman Dan Fleszar teamed with Garnett for an 8-3 victory at second doubles. Wooster does not play again until its spring break trip (March 10-19) to Hilton Head, S.C. |
