Saldanha Stays Perfect, But Scots Lose Another 4-3 Decision

Nilesh Saldanha
Nilesh Saldanha improved his record to 8-0 on the season with a win over CWRU.
The College of Wooster men's tennis team won the doubles point on Thursday (March 27), but dropped four of the six singles matches to visiting Case Western Reserve University, marking its third 4-3 loss of the 2003 campaign.

Wooster (4-4), which also won a one-point decision earlier in the season, posted victories at second and third doubles, as the Scots' Alec Garnett and Chris Mickelson and Tim Wyatt and Cyrus Karimian combined their efforts for 8-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Up 1-0, the Scots went on to the singles competition, where at No. 1, Nilesh Saldanha improved to 8-0 this year with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 decision over Case Western Reserve's up-and-comer Steve Hsu.

Second, fourth, and fifth singles each went to the Spartans (8-1) in straight-sets, but Mickelson evened the match at 3-3 by posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6.

That left No. 3 singles - Wooster's Clint Bailey and Case Western Reserve's Eric Radke - on the court to decide it. Bailey took the first set 6-4, but Radke edged him in a tiebreaker (7-2) to take the second and won the third 6-2 to clinch the match.

Before continuing their five-out-of-six-match homestand, the Scots head to the road for a non-league tilt at Capital University (3-2) on Monday afternoon (March 31) at 3:30 p.m.
