Bowie, Swegal Selected First-Team Academic All-District
For the second season in a row, The College of Wooster men’s soccer team has two representatives on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, as seniors Jason Bowie (Delaware, Ohio / Rutherford B. Hayes) and Warren Swegal (Sewickley, Pa. / Quaker Valley) earned the honor, announced the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Bowie and Swegal were both voted to the first team, meaning they will move on to the national ballot for Academic All-American® consideration. Bowie, a repeat selection after earning second-team academic all-district honors last year, was a part of the Scots’ regular rotation again and took many of the squad’s free kicks during 2007. For his career, the defensive standout played in 60 of a possible 64 matches, including 30 starts, and tallied one assist. Academically, Bowie is majoring in biochemistry & molecular biology and has made Dean’s List five times. Swegal started every match for Wooster this fall and totaled a career-high four points, in addition to his defensive responsibilities. The second goal of his career gave the Scots a 1-0 lead at regionally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University on Oct. 12. Swegal, who played in 54 games with 29 starts the last four seasons, also is a biochemistry & molecular biology major and five-time member of the Dean’s List. The midfielders played a key role in limiting opponents’ scoring opportunities, as the Fighting Scots posted shutouts in six of 16 matches. Overall, Wooster, which finished with a .500 record (7-7-2) and took sixth-place in the highly-competitive North Coast Athletic Conference (3-4-2), averaged 1.25 goals allowed. The honorees were selected by CoSIDA among top players with minimum 3.20 grade-point averages from the college division (NCAA Div. II and III, and NAIA) in Wooster’s five-state district (Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee). |
