Scots Host W&J Under the Lights, Then Head to Denison
Following a rare 10-day break without a game, The College of Wooster men’s lacrosse team has two in-region contests during a four-day period this week, starting on Wednesday, April 11. That night, the Scots, winners of two in a row, welcome Washington & Jefferson College (1-7), which is riding a five-game losing streak, to Wooster High School for a 7 p.m. opening face-off. It will mark the squads’ fourth ever meeting, with Wooster winning all three previous contests easily – 15-4 in 2006, 22-13 in 2005, and 25-3 in 2003. On Saturday, April 14, the Scots will travel to North Coast Athletic Conference preseason favorite Denison University (7-2, 1-0 NCAC) for each teams’ second league game of the year, beginning at 1 p.m. Wooster has come close, but it has not beaten Denison since the 1991 campaign, including one-goal decisions for the Big Red two of the last three years (8-7 in 2006, 8-7 in 2004).
Last Game: The Scots won their most recent game to improve their record to 5-1 overall.
On April 1, Wooster scored five unanswered goals during the fourth quarter, including two apiece from freshman midfielder Pat Coyne (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) and sophomore attacker Mark Weschler (Silver Spring, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel), to pull away from visiting Whittier College for a 13-6 victory. Whittier had scored the last three goals of the third quarter, pulling within two (8-6), but it was all Scots in the fourth. For the game, Weschler had four goals and Coyne finished with a hat trick and one assist, while Hisham Hassan (Winchester, Mass. / Winchester) and Chris Vaccaro (Plano, Texas / Plano) each contributed two goals and two assists. Also with a multi-point outing was Ben Abbott (Yarmouth, Maine / Canterbury School – Conn.) with two assists. Defensively, Matt Biester (Wallingford, Pa. / Strath Haven) made 11 saves while playing all 60 minutes in goal for Wooster.
