After finishing third in its initial event of the 2006-07 season, The College of Wooster golf team struggled a bit this weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 1), slipping to sixth-place amongst a similar group of teams at the Wittenberg Fall Invitational.

Wooster finished ahead of Wittenberg University, Denison University, and five others two weeks ago, but its team scores of 322 at the Windy Knoll Golf Course Saturday and 326 at the Reid Park Golf Course on Sunday for a 648 total pushed the Scots back behind fourth-place Wittenberg (642) and fifth-place Denison (646).

Coming in 1-2 again were Ohio Wesleyan University (604) and Allegheny College (610), while taking third-place was Otterbein College (613). Wooster finished in front of Hiram College (675), Wabash College (681), Kenyon College (697), and Miami University-Hamilton (702).

Individually, junior Erik Shoger was the Scots’ low scorer for the first time in his career, as he rebounded from an opening day 84 and fired a 75, tying for the second-lowest score of all 59 players at the Reid Park Golf Course. Shoger tied for 19th overall (159), while right behind him in a tie for 22nd was classmate Patrick Lynch, who carded back-to-back 80s (160).

Wooster’s No. 1 golfer, senior Andy Van Horn, shot an uncharacteristic 87 Sunday to offset a 79 at the Windy Knoll Golf Course and put him in a tie for 31st overall (166). Two strokes back were teammates Sean Glaser (84-84) and Matt Mellott (79-89), part of a tie for 37th-place.

The Scots conclude their 2006 competitive season at this weekend’s Denison Fall Invitational.
