Four Sophomores Lead Scots to Fifth-Place Finish at JCU Invite
Playing without two of their anticipated starters for the 2005-06 season, The College of Wooster golfers made their debut on Sept. 11, finishing fifth at the seven-team, 27-hole John Carroll Fall Invitational held at Fowler's Mill Golf Course in Chesterland, Ohio. With junior multi-sport star Andy Van Horn taking this fall off from golf and senior Brandon Tylka nursing an injury, sophomore Jim Ipema assumed the Scots' top position. He turned in a three-over par (38) on the Maple Course and followed that up with a 10-over 82 on the River/Lake Course, good for a tie for 12th-place (120). Also representing Wooster in the top-20 individual standings was classmate Pat Lynch, who carded a 39 and 83 for a 15-over par (122). Two other Scot sophomores scored as well in Erik Shoger and Jason Greenwald, who turned in 40-83=123 and 43-81=124, respectively, while senior Mike Becker rounded out the lineup and shot 43-93=136. All told, Wooster totaled 489 strokes (160-329), while John Carroll University won its own event with a 468 score (149-319). The Scots will play their second of four fall tourneys this weekend, as they're set to participate in the Wittenberg Fall Invitational at two different courses in the Springfield area on Sept. 17-18. |
