In its third fall event of 2003-04, The College of Wooster golf team placed third of 10 squads at the Mt. Union College Invitational. Wooster turned in consistent rounds of 305 and 306, despite the event (Sept. 28-29) being played on two different courses, with Sunday’s round taking place at the Tannenhauf Golf Club and Monday’s at Alliance Country Club.

The Scots’ score of 611 was just edged out by second-place Allegheny College (608), while another North Coast Athletic Conference rival, Denison University, won the event with a 588. Also in the field were two squads apiece from Baldwin-Wallace College, host Mt. Union, and Walsh University.

Freshman Andy Van Horn led Wooster individually with a 73 at Tannenhauf and a 76 at Alliance, as his 149 total was good for a tie for eight in the field of 63 golfers. Junior teammate Joe Punturi was not far behind, turning in a 78 and 73, respectively, for a 151 to finish 14th-place tie overall.

Additionally for the Scots, junior Michael Tilden shot back-to-back rounds of 77 while coming in a tie for 22nd, sophomore Brandon Tylka had 77-80=157 to tie for 28th, and junior Paul Hiller entered each clubhouse with 80s, tying for 38th.

Wooster had two competing as individuals as well. Junior Tyler Scott would have figured in the scoring with his 79-77=158, which put him in a tie for 32nd-place, while sophomore Mike Becker turned in 82-85=167 to tie for 54th at his first official collegiate event.

The Scots will wrap up their brief fall schedule next Monday (Oct. 6) with an 18-hole event in Westerville, Ohio — the Otterbein College Fall Invitational.
