Van Horn, Tilden Pave Way for Scots’ Third-Place Showing
Led by a pair of top-five individual performances at the Ted Barclay Spring Invitational, hosted by Denison University at the Granville Golf Club April 9-10, The College of Wooster placed third of 16 teams. It marks the Scots’ third consecutive top-three finish this spring. Wooster, which shot 303-310=613 as a team, nearly brought home the medalist, as Andy Van Horn completed his 36 holes in a three-over 145 (71-74), which tied for first. But, Ohio Wesleyan University’s Chad Poling (70-75=145) prevailed in a one-hole playoff for the top individual honor. Ohio Wesleyan also won the team championship with back-to-back 300’s, eight strokes ahead of Denison (304-304=608), while within two strokes of the Scots were DePauw University (307-307=614) and Olivet College (303-311=614) in a tie for fourth-place as well as Muskingum College (309-306=615). Joining Van Horn in the top-five of the individual standings from Wooster was Michael Tilden, who carded a 73 and a 75 for a six-over 148 at the par-71, 6,559-yard course. The Scots’ remaining starters had their troubles this weekend. Paul Hiller (81-80=161) and Brandon Tylka (80-81=161) tied for 53rd, while an uncharacteristic 87 on Saturday from Joe Punturi put Wooster’s top golfer in a tie for 78th (79-87=166). Next, the Scots will host their annual tournament, the Parlor Restaurant/Wooster Invitational, on April 16-17. |
