Scot Golfers Start 2001-02 Season With Top-10 Finish

The College of Wooster golf team got its 2001-02 campaign off to a solid start with a top-10 finish at the 2nd Annual Buck Leslie Invitational, hosted by Washington & Lee University at the par-71, 6444-yard Lexington Golf & Country Club in Lexington, Va., on Sept. 17-18.

Wooster placed 10th in the 16-team field, which featured two NCAA Division I schools as well as a pair of nationally-ranked squads in Division III.

Averett College, which came in ninth at the 2001 NCAA Division III Championships, won the event, firing team scores of 287-289=576, while Christopher Newport University was runner-up (296-288=584) following its 15th-place finish at last season's national tournament.

Next were host Washington & Lee (305-301=606), Drexel University (306-305=611), Roanoke College (309-314=623), North Carolina Wesleyan University (308-316=624), Lynchburg College (312-315=627), Hampden-Sydney College (323-306=629), and Randolph Macon College (317-314=631).

The Scots, who carded rounds of 318-314=632, finished in front of Ferrum College (328-322=650), Virginia Wesleyan College (325-325=650), Virginia Military Institute (328-326=654), Chowan College (329-337=666), Bridgewater College (340-329=669), and Newport News Apprentice School (340-344=684).

Individually, Wooster was led by freshman Joe Punturi (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth-Forward), who came in a tie for 24th among the 79 linksters after scoring 78-78=156. Averett's Toni Karjalainen captured medalist honors (73-68=141).

One stroke behind Punturi was Scot junior Jonathan Pintado (Joplin, Mo. / Thomas Jefferson), who shot 79-78=157 for a 27th-place tie. Next for the Wooster contingent were freshmen Jordan Roeschlaub (Scotts Mills, Ore. / Silverton) and Tyler Scott (Loudonville, Ohio / Loudonville), who tied for 41st with 162s, as Roeschlaub entered the clubhouse with 83-79 and Scott had 78-84.

Also for the Scots, junior Matt Elliott (Wooster, Ohio / Wooster) turned in an 85-79=164, good enough for a tie for 49th-place overall.

Wooster continues its fall schedule next week with the Baldwin-Wallace College Fall Invitational at Hawk's Nest Golf Club in Creston, Ohio, Sunday and Monday, Sept. 23-24.
