Scot Golfers Wrap Up Fall With Ninth-Place Finish
 | | Matt Elliott |
The College of Wooster golf team concluded its fall season on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 12-13) with a ninth-place showing at the 12-team Powerade Fall Collegiate, which was held in West Lafayette, Ohio, at the 6,500-yard River Greens Golf Course.
It was a 'play-six, count-five' format, as opposed to the normal 'play-five, count-four' scoring used at most tournaments. Also, it was expected to be a 27-hole event each day, but weather conditions changed it back into a normal 18-hole tourney.
As a team, Wooster shot consistent rounds of 392-391=783 in the competitive field, and taking home the championship was an NCAA Division II institution, the University of Charleston (731).
NAIA power Malone College came in second-place (739), followed by another Division II school, Bryant College (749), while spots No. 4 through No. 8 went to Urbana University (765), Ohio Valley College (768), West Liberty State College (771), Mt. Union College (779), and Marietta College (781).
The Scots finished in front of Slippery Rock University (799), Davis & Elkins College (811), as well as Tiffin University (813).
Individually for Wooster, junior Matt Elliott (Wooster, Ohio / Wooster) produced one of his finest tournaments to date, tying for third overall with 76-68=144. He was just one stroke shy of the medalist, and his 68 was the lowest score that any of the linksters turned in on day two.
Two other Scots shot under 160 - freshmen Michael Tilden (Delaware, Ohio / Rutherford B. Hayes) and Joe Punturi (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward). Tilden matched rounds of 79 together for a 158, while Punturi also carded a 158 with his coming on scores of 78 and 80.
Rounding out Wooster's contingent were junior Jonathan Pintado (Joplin, Mo. / Thomas Jefferson), who shot 77-83=160, freshman Tyler Scott (Loudonville, Ohio / Loudonville), who fired 82-81=163), and freshman Jordan Roeschlaub (Scotts Mills, Ore. / Silverton), who had 82-85=167.
Outside of Elliott's, the individual finishes in the field were not available at the time of this release.
The Scots will continue their season in March with their annual southern trip during spring break.
