In its final prep for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, The College of Wooster golfers finished seventh at the 15-team Ohio Weselyan University Strimer Invitational this weekend (April 26-27). Wooster shot rounds of 310-317=617 - the third-lowest score among the seven NCAC teams at the annual event held at par-71, 6,628-yard Oakhaven Golf Course in Delaware, Ohio - while Otterbein College won (290-301=591). A stroke behind Otterbein for the second consecutive week was host Ohio Wesleyan (291-301=592). Also ahead of the Scots were John Carroll University (304-299=603), Denison University (298-308=606), Baldwin-Wallace College (304-309=613), and Mt. Union College (314-301=615). Wooster was just lower than NCAC rival and eighth-place Wittenberg University (306-315=621), while rounding out the field were Olivet College (308-314=622), Hope College (317-310=627), Kenyon College (332-323=655), Wabash College (342-333=675), Hiram College (352-341=693), Oberlin College (343-353=696), and Heidelberg College (357-340=697). Individually, the Scots' No. 1 player, Matt Elliott, paced his squad as usual with a 75-77=152. That was good for a tie for 20th overall among the 90 linksters and nine shots behind medalist Wes Harman of Otterbein (71-72=143). Jon Pintado was next for Wooster, shooting 79 on the first day and a season-low 74 on Saturday for 153 and a tie for 24th, while scoring on both days and tying for 33rd was Joe Punturi with 75-80=155. Completing the Scots' starters were Tyler Scott in a tie for 43rd (79-79=158) and Michael Tilden in a tie for 50th (78-83=161), and playing as an individual was Jordan Roeschlaub who tied for 46th (81-78=159). At the NCAC Championships on May 3-4 at Apple Valley Golf Course in Howard, Ohio, Wooster will be aiming to finish better than its fifth-place performance in 2001. |
